The Position

Reporting to the V.P. Finance, the Manager, Finance and Accounting will lead a Finance Team to coordinate and oversee the monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting processes as well as internal and external reporting of financial statement and analytical reports for use by management and various external sources. The Manager will play a lead role in developing and monitoring annual budgets. The Manager is responsible for ensuring conformance to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), as well as monitoring and reporting on internal controls. This position serves as a resource to Managers throughout the organization, providing analytical methods and financial measures to support their decision making. This position will coordinate investments, the treasury function, cash flows and applicable government reporting. The Manager will work under minimal supervision, with a high degree of accuracy and personal initiative.

Education and Experience

Minimum:

CA, CGA or CMA or post-secondary education with a specialty in accounting and at least 6 years’ accounting experience. At least four years’ experience preparing complex financial statements and performing complex financial statement analysis. Experience supervising staff; solid supervisory and coaching skills. Experience and demonstrated capability of serving as effective financial business partner in customer oriented environment dealing with wide range of business areas. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities in a deadline-oriented environment. Strong PC skills including proficiency in spreadsheet applications.

Desired:

Experience in the financial services industry. Experience with IFRS. Graduate/active participant of CUIC Management Studies Program

Experience and Knowledge Base

Completion of programs or courses in specialized financial software, communications and performance management would be a definite asset. Experience in retail operations within a financial institution would be an asset.

Understanding of credit union philosophy and principles, credit union values and organizational direction, credit union sales and service culture, credit union policies and procedures, credit union products and services, credit union accounting cycle, credit union banking system, accounting theory, and security and robbery procedures.

Under general supervision, responsible for recommending growth/profit and goals for Westoba Credit Union, and for attainment of established objectives. Promotes, up sells and cross sells the full range of credit union services. Provides basic technical support on commercial accounts to assist co-workers and management of commercial accounts and all functions of credit granting and control to satisfy member needs and protect the interests of Westoba Credit Union. This position deals with small to medium sized memberships/connections of the credit union as assigned by the Manager Commercial Services Centre.

Position Specifications

Education:

Grade 12 equivalent. Post secondary degree/diploma in business administration or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Also enrolled in or completed the Business Relationship Manager course would be an asset.

Personal Skills:

Well developed interpersonal skills with an interest in working with and helping people. Understanding of common courtesies. Proven ability to meet deadlines within the required time frames. Computer literacy. Demonstrate strong capabilities in analysis, judgement, decision-making and the ability to thrive in a team atmosphere.

The Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation guarantees the deposits of Alberta credit unions and ensures sound business practices are maintained.

This position reports to the Assistant Vice President, Regulation and Risk Assessment and is accountable for carrying out risk based monitoring of credit unions for the identification of issues and risk. A key responsibility of the position is to liaise with various levels of management within the credit union system, as well as the Board of Directors, to report findings, recommendations and, ensure safety and soundness of the credit unions. The Position

  • Perform on and off-site risk based monitoring for early identification of risks and adherence to sound business practices.
  • Work with credit unions to ensure effective resolution of identified risks including areas of governance, credit union risk management, financial analysis and asset-liability management.
  • Identify, evaluate and communicate risks and trends to the appropriate internal and external stakeholders which can include credit union management, Board of Directors and other stakeholders.
  • Continuously improve monitoring systems through application of best practices.

The Person

  • Professional accounting designation (e.g. CA, CMA, CGA), Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation, graduate studies in finance or risk management or, Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation are considered an asset
  • Financial institution experience is an asset
  • Strong financial analysis capabilities, risk management experience, internal audit skills and understanding of controls
  • Facilitation, negotiation, presentation, conflict resolution and decision making skills
  • Work independently and part of a team with effective time management skills
  • Interpersonal skills, relationship management and change management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
