Making a difference.

Manitoba's credit unions are dedicated to helping people and strengthening our communities. Every year, credit unions donate time, money and resources to a variety of causes that help make our province a great place to live.

In the past decade, credit unions have collectively distributed more than $26 million in charitable donations, scholarships and sponsorships, offered reduced service fees to over 9,000 organizations doing good work in the province, and funded a variety of major projects that have a lasting positive impact on Manitobans.

Hands on help.

Credit unions take a hands-on approach to making good things happen. Nationally, almost 80 per cent of employees choose to volunteer during their unpaid time off, and 70 per cent participate in community activities as part of their paid work. [ Source: CCUA ]

Siloam Mission.

Siloam Mission provides meals, shelter, and essential services for people experiencing homelessness. Unfortunately, demand for their services continues to increase. To address this challenge, Siloam ran a campaign to raise $19 million to expand its facilities, kitchen and dining room, add 50 shelter beds (increasing capacity from 110 to 160) and other ammenities, more transition programs, services, case managers and volunteers, and increase volunteer space.

Manitoba’s credit unions contributed a $100,000 gift to the Make Room campaign and received naming recognition in the Student Classroom in Siloam’s expanded facility.

2017 Canada Summer Games.

The 2017 Canada Summer Games welcomed over 4,000 athletes and coaches, and 20,000 visitors to Manitoba. The Games featured 16 sports and 250+ events. It is our country's largest multi-sport event for young athletes, and left a lasting legacy of new and enhanced sport facilities, as well as volunteer and leadership development that will benefit athletes and the broader community for years to come. The event was a huge success, and Manitoba athletes set 3 significant records.

Manitoba’s credit unions provided $150,000 in sponsorship funds for the Games. This contribution made it possible for spectators to attend many of the events free of charge.

Habitat for Humanity.

With the help of volunteers and community partners, Habitat for Humanity Manitoba works with people from all walks of life to build safe, decent, affordable housing for purchase by low-income working families. Volunteers, including teams from Manitoba's credit unions, work on building houses alongside future Habitat homeowners.

In addition to participating in Habitat for Humanity build projects, Manitoba’s credit unions provided $25,000 in sponsorship funds to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership..

Manitoba Forage & Grassland Association.

In response to seasonal flooding in Manitoba, the Manitoba Forage & Grassland Association's Aquanty Project is developing new tools to reduce the impact of these events on the agricultural industry within the Assiniboine River Basin. Flooding has caused major crop losses, property damage, and claims above and beyond crop insurance.

Manitoba’s credit unions committed support to this project overover a five-year span (beginning in 2017) to help lessen the need for government disaster relief in response to events like these.

Canadian Museum of Human Rights.

Twenty participating Manitoba credit unions committed more than $316,000 to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights.

"The dual social and economic character of credit unions is driven by a series of co-operative principles that we take very seriously," said Credit Union Central of Manitoba CEO Garth Manness. "The credit union vision of social justice, which extends to our members and the larger community, aligns exceptionally well with the vision of the museum's founders."
